Vladimir Rachmanov

June 1, 1931 ~ March 30, 2018 (age 86)

Vladimir Rachmanov passed away peacefully at his home in Monterey on March 30, 2018.  He will be sorely missed by many of his friends and relatives in Russia, Europe and the US.  

Moscow-born Vladimir was admired for his conviviality, passion for life and music, for which he was a gifted classical guitarist who performed in recital and taught his instrument for many years.  He also had an interest in composition and authored several songs, which he liked to sing,accompanying himself on guitar. He was an avid reader and a great fan of literature.  Among his hobbies was also chess.


Vladimir came to the US in 1987 and moved to Monterey to serve as a Russian instructor at the Defense Language Institute in 1989.  Having graduated from the Moscow State Institute of Foreign Languages as an English major in 1954, he worked as a translator/interpreter/teacher all his professional life. During the 1993-99 period he worked in NASA (Houston) as a translator/interpreter for Russian cosmonauts involved in US-Russia joint program in the Russian space station “Mir.” 

Vladimir Rachmanov is survived by his son, the pianist Dmitry Rachmanov of Northridge, CA, his first wife Nellie Rachmanov of New York City, and his partner for the last 25 years and a former DLI colleague and author, Natalia Yablokoff.
