Paul Douglas Coss

February 23, 1934 ~ May 21, 2018 (age 84)

Paul D. Coss, longtime resident of Carmel-by-the-Sea died peacefully May 21st at the age of 84.  He is survived by Kathleen, his wife of 33 years; daughter, Deborah; son, Doug; Daughter-in-law, Annette; two granddaughters, Chloe and Camille; and an extended family of nieces and nephews. Paul enjoyed a long and fulfilling career in entertainment starting out as a radio DJ in Boston and moving into television production, management and ultimately film distribution.  His work spanned diverse locations from Pittsburgh and Baltimore to Los Angeles, Europe and Asia.

He would reminisce about his early days producing television talk shows, working with Regis Philbin and needing to call Julia Child last minute to fill-in for a no-show guest: "she was a wonderful sport and a great guest!”  But Paul most relished his later years with ABC Television in the newly formed International Film Development Division.  It was there he developed and produced movies in partnership with film companies from around the world.

Paul was an early adopter of technology, using an Apple II at home in the late 70’s.  He always enjoyed the challenge of learning new programs and could often be seen having a cup of coffee and muffin at Il Fornaio while reading PC Magazine.

His much deserved retirement presented him with the time to serve as a member of the Carmel Historic Resources Board, attend mass at Carmel Mission and walk the scenic pathway.  Paul truly loved and enjoyed his life but after several years of declining health he was ready to move on.  Now he will be able to embrace a more beautiful world, one of freedom, majesty and grace.  But his easy laugh and charming good nature will be remembered.

Memorial to be held in September at the VA Cemetery
