Larry Wayne Rollins

December 19, 1945 ~ September 12, 2019 (age 73)

Larry Wayne Rollins, 73, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at the home he shared with his wife and three children for nearly four decades. Born in Leavenworth, KS, Larry was the only son of Lloyd and Florence (Woodruff) Rollins.

A well-known and respected Monterey County CPA, Larry earned his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in 1969 and accepted a position at the accountancy firm of Peat Marwick (now KPMG) in Kansas City, MO upon graduation. Shortly thereafter, he was asked to report to Fort Ord in Monterey, CA as part of the U.S. Army Reserves. His move West proved life-changing, as Larry met the love of his life and wife of 49 years, Marie Rollins, née Russo, of Del Rey Oaks, CA, through the help of an Army friend.

Now calling California his home, Larry never abandoned the Midwestern values of hard work, devotion to God and to family, and professional integrity he learned growing up. To the end, he remained a tireless and honorable accountant and advisor to his clients, business partners, and co-workers, many he considered close personal friends with whom he’d share meals, holidays, and other special occasions. He was an avid golfer and proud member of the Corral de Tierra Country Club, where he'd spend many a Wednesday and Saturday playing 18-holes and then participating in lively games of Gin Rummy or Poker in the clubhouse. He may have even played an integral role in bringing Santa Claus to the club for their annual Breakfast.

Larry loved watching sports too and coached many years of youth football for the Salinas Colts/Broncos. His proudest moments, however, came as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he expressed tremendous joy in watching his grandchildren succeed at their own endeavors. Nightly, Larry looked forward to enjoying a cocktail and cigar with his wife in front of the house they both spent so many years filling with life and love. Larry's hearty and contagious laughter and enthusiasm accompanied him wherever he went, and his quick wit and sense of humor were traits his family and friends knew well.

Larry is survived by his wife, Marie; their three sons and beloved daughters-in-law, Lonny (Belinda) Rollins of San Luis Obispo, CA, Mark (Dacia) Rollins of Salinas, CA, and Paul (Melanie) Rollins of Bellevue, WA; eight grandchildren, Vincent, Luke, Lea, Dominick, Bailey, Ashley, Maxwell, and Quinn; his sister, Mary Jane (Bruce) Bennett of Lacey, WA; and many loving cousins, nephews, nieces, and close friends.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held, quite appropriately, at the Corral de Tierra Country Club (81 Corral De Tierra Rd, Corral De Tierra, CA 93908) on Friday, September 27th at 2:00 PM. Special thanks is due to the staff at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Larry’s honor to AIM Youth Mental Health at P.O. Box 4235, Carmel, CA 93921 or https://aimformentalhealth.org/donate/
