Helen Southwick Barkalow

September 22, 1919 ~ April 23, 2018 (age 98)

Helen Southwick Barkalow was born in Philadelphia, PA, to George and Nellie (Farren) Southwick and grew up in Wildwood, New Jersey, where she met her husband James Field Barkalow. They were married for 68 years and lived the majority of their lives at the “Jersey Shore”. In 2009 Helen moved to California to be near her son, Stephen and his family, but she traveled frequently to southern California and back to New Jersey for family visits.
Helen’s life was long and filled with many years of wonderful family adventures, travels and time with family which brought her great joy.
During her final few months Helen lived at Merrill Gardens in Monterey where she met new friends, enjoyed a social life and found companionship with several caring and wonderful residents. The staff employed at the residence were wonderful, compassionate and attentive to her many needs.
Although Helen was healthy and active all her life, she did require medical attention during her last three months that was provided by Hospice of the Central Coast and the nurses from CHOMP. The care and attention she received from the nurses, Pamela and Christine, was far and above all that could be expected. Her family also wants to thank her friend and frequent companion Julia Sevier for her tireless support.
Helen is survived by her sisters Grace (Bill) Hicks of Bucks County, PA and Joan Dodds of Frederick, MD, her three children Sharon, James (Ellen), and Stephen (Lisa), and her 8 grandchildren,15 great-grandchildren and many relatives.A celebration of life will be held later this year at the Jersey Shore.
Our family would like to ask that donations be made to Hospice of the Central Coast or Animal Friends Rescue Project.
