Bethany Koenig

December 19, 2019

Obituary

Bethany Kay Koenig (Worgess), 65, of Monterey, CA, died peacefully on December 19, 2019. A devout Christian with a love of life, she courageously fought a battle with melanoma since being diagnosed in 2018. She entered the gates of heaven at home in the presence of her loving husband Bill and her family.

She was born July 12, 1954 in Michigan, the daughter of Lewis and Helen (Barrett) Worgess of North Branch. Growing up on a farm imbued her with a love of animals, nature, and family that lasted her lifetime. She graduated from North Branch High School in 1972 and obtained a nursing degree from Northern Michigan University in 1976. After graduation, her love of emergency medical care began as she became a surgical/trauma nurse at Lapeer General Hospital in North Branch and St. Joseph’s hospital in Ypsilanti.

In 1981 she moved to California with a friend and obtained a nursing Master’s Degree and Nurse Practitioner License in Long Beach California. For over 35 years she practiced her healing skills in the Emergency department and Trauma services at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, a 600 bed hospital in Long Beach. She became recognized and loved over those years for her compassion, clinical expertise, work ethic, and loving care she gave to patients. She was described as a source of inspiration, light, and bright spirit by her coworkers.

Bill and Bethany met while working together in the Emergency Department in the late 1980’s, and married in 1995. In 2005 they retired and moved to Monterey in 2015 to be surrounded by the natural beauty she so treasured. She was a photographer and a poet – both the written word and photographs expressed her inner feelings and love of life. Whether hiking in her loved Yosemite, photographing the Big Sur Coast at home, or visiting her Michigan farm - she always sought solitude in nature.

Family time, either back home in Michigan or in California, always received highest priority. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Bethany is survived by her husband Bill, son Justin Koenig of Sonoma, CA; daughter Lori of Santa Rosa, Ca, and her beloved grandchildren Toby, Kai, and Ian; her brother Joe, sisters Colette Jones, Janele Thompson, and Renee Worgess.

Bethany was laid to rest on January 3, 2020, in Monterey, CA. Memorial contributions can be made on her behalf to childcareworldwide.org or to Tina’s place at Tinasplace.com. Tina’s place is a resort for patients with stage 3 or 4 melanoma.
