Astrid Lang

April 28, 1939 ~ November 5, 2018 (age 79)

Astrid Rosa Lang passed away peacefully on November 5th in her Marina home surrounded by her loving family.

Born April 28, 1939 in Schmeidiberg, Germany her family endured the hardships of post-World War II.  Eventually settling in Eichstatt, Germany.  While working at her parents’ Gasthaus she met the love of her life – an American GI named Billy Joe Lang.

They had 3 children and eventually were stationed at Fort Ord.  Upon Billy’s retirement, they moved to nearby Marina.  In 1970, she became a successful hairdresser opening her own shop in downtown Monterey.  She continued that profession until 2011, 

Upon the death of her beloved daughter in 1994, she along with her husband became involved in the local POMC Chapter, where she advocated for victims’ rights, held remembrance vigils and served on several committee boards.  She and Billy began their philanthropic work in their daughter’s name by donating to the Pacific Grove Youth Center and was responsible for bringing the Christmas Tree and the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony to Pacific Grove’s Jewel Park. They also created scholarships for deserving young adults, and eventually began to make the current Marina Library a reality with their sizeable contribution.  The Library was completed in 2007.  The Children’s Room was named in honor of their daughter Michelle. The City of Marina recognized her efforts on behalf of the community by awarding her its 2014 Woman of the Year.

Later in life, she became a partner in her son Steven’s Business (Lang Fine Western Art) and worked long hours seeing to its success. Her interests included being a grandma, cooking, baking, gardening, traveling and being a compassionate voice for all who sought her advice.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Michelle and her husband Billy.  Astrid is survived by her sons Bill and Family of Los Gatos, CA and Steven (LeAnn, Johnny and Josh) of Marina, CA.  Grandsons, Ian Klotz (Ashley) of Marina and Patrick Klotz (Jessyca) of Paradise, CA and her very much loved Great Grandson, Liam of Paradise, CA. 

May she rest in Peace.

In lieu of flowers, Astrid asks you to consider placing a donation to the Marina Library’s Michelle Lang Children’s Room or the ALS Association. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at San Carlos Cathedral Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 10:00am with committal to follow at San Carlos Cemetery.  Reception will follow at San Carlos Hall.
