Angela Maheras

August 2, 1928 ~ July 10, 2018 (age 89)

Our lovely Lula, Mom, Yiayia, Thea/Tia passed away on the evening of July 10. Mom's incredible spirit allowed her to endure twenty-plus years of Parkinson's Disease with grace and an incredible smile. Mom loved everyone she met and befriended many. She always found the best in people.
Lula was born in Guadalajara, Mexico to her parents Harilaos and Theodora and was the oldest of their five children. The Maheras children: Jennie (Dalton) Dorothy (Rich), Tom and Harry (Jamie); grandchildren: Brent, Ashlee, Amanda, Christopher, Kimberly and Nikos; and her 8 great-grandchildren, would like to thank everyone who was a part of her life, who enriched her life and in-turn enriched our own lives. The stories that have been told by so many people of her love's impact on their and their children's lives has been amazing.
Mom had an accent that often confused people. She was of Greek ancestry, but of Mexican culture, she was a proud Tapatio (of Guadalajara). Mom's ability to speak three languages fluently (Greek, Spanish and English) endeared her to even more people.
The love of Mom's life was Tommy. Their love story began in Chicago in December 1949 when they met at events leading up to a relative's wedding. They corresponded for over three years and married in April 1953 in Guadalajara.
They moved from Chicago to California in the summer of 1953 and found an opportunity to open a restaurant, Hamburger Pete's, in Monterey. In 1954 they opened a second restaurant, Jennie's Cafe, two doors down. Dad often cooked for both restaurants with Mom racing back and forth between serving and charming her customers.
When Mom was pregnant with Dorothy, she was having contractions while working at Jennie's Cafe. Dad was too busy to be able to take Mom to the hospital, so two sailors and a mortician took Mom to the hospital instead.
The third, and final restaurant they opened on Alvarado was Tommy's Steakhouse. They always worked hard but often ended the day dancing at the Casa Munras. They were inseparable until Dad's passing on May 15, 2000. What a wonderful life they shared.
We would like to thank Mom's medical support over the past 25 years: Dr. Cindy Lee, Dr. Thomas Bradley, Dr. Alejandro Centurion, Dr. Dragan Dimitrov, VNA Palliative Care and VNA Hospice Care. Your care over the years to her final day is very much appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131; The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society , Donor Services, PO Box 98018, Washington DC 20090-8018; St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, PO Box 5808, Carmel, CA. 93921 or a charity of your choosing.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 28, at St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church at 9th Ave. and Lincoln St. in Carmel at 11:00 a.m. Burial services will follow at San Carlos Cemetery, 792 Fremont St. in Monterey, Ca. and the reception/celebration will be back at the church in Carmel.
